The World Health Organization reports that to date there are over 6.8 million COVID-19 related deaths. Here are a few examples of how communities around the world have responded to the tragedies with large-scale memorials to commemorate those lost due to the virus.

Washington D.C.: At the National Mall, there was a public art installation called "In America: Remember". Artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg along with volunteers arranged over 600,000 white flags.

Prague: The cobblestone streets of The Old Town Square in Prague, Czech Republic were adorned with thousands of white crosses commemorating 1 year since the death of the first COVID-19 patient in the country.

London: Local artists created the National Covid Memorial Wall by drawing 150,000 pink and red hearts near St. Thomas hospital. Each heart was dedicated to a COVID-19 victim.

Johannesburg, South Africa: A fence outside St. James Presbyterian Church held over 20,000 ribbons, each tied to it by caretakers, friends and family members in memory of a loved one lost to COVID-19.

Bedworth, England: Sculptor David Best created 1,000 wooden carvings with notes from those who lost loved ones. The sculptures were pieced together into a 65-foot tall structure called "Sanctuary at the Miner's Welfare Park" and ceremonially set on fire to show releasing grief.

Bergamo, Italy: "The Wood of Memory" is a forest of seedlings planted in honor of the over 100,000 COVID-19 victims in Italy.
