Sea swimming is one of many outdoor activities gaining in popularity. Its free, good for your health and easily accessible for coastal communities. With so many new swimmers taking to the waves, there's a lot to learn about sea safety.

DON'T GO ALONE! Even seasoned sea swimmers take another person along, it just makes sense. As there are a number of risk factors that could affect your swim and having a partner with you can literally save lives. There is safety in numbers!

DON'T STRAY FROM THE BAY! Unless you are an accomplished swimmer, don't venture into open waters. The waves can be choppy and erratic with sudden swells and powerful tides. Instead, swim along the bay, parallel to the shore, at a depth you feel comfortable with.

DON'T ASSUME, ASK! Do a little research on the bay you intend on visiting. Find out the tide times and conditions. When you arrive, assess the bay for hazards like large rocks. Ask yourself is anyone else swimming there, and if not, why not?

DON'T OVERDO IT! Start your sea swimming journey with a modest goal and work upwards. Some people aim to dip daily while others use timed goals. Whatever way you sea swim, listen to your body. If at any point you feel uncomfortable or suffer pain, get out and get dry immediately.

DON'T FORGET YOUR KIT! A swimming cap can keep your head warm while you paddle. Wear a wetsuit if the water is too cold or invest in neoprene wetsuit boots. Wear waterproof sunscreen The important thing is that you feel comfortable and protected against the elements.

DON'T STAY WET! After your swim, dry your body quickly and thoroughly with a clean towel. Change into warm comfortable clothing. Sip a hot drink and a snack as sugar will help raise your core temperature. Towel dry your hair as you warm up gradually, preferably under cover.

DON'T DISREGARD THE WEATHER! The weather and the waves can turn at a moment’s notice, pay attention to forecasts before you swim. If it starts to rain heavily, thunder and lightning or any other drastic change of meteorological conditions, be ready to evacuate!

DON'T WING IT! Have a rough entry and exit point of the swim area mapped out in your head. Choose an area that is free from rocks or other obstacles and one that is easy to navigate with wet feet. Don't leave anything to chance at sea. Be safe and enjoy your swim!
