1) Martyrdom of Polycarp Martyr means "witness." Polycarp was one of the first. Written by followers of his who saw it happen. The authorities come for the old bishop of Smyrna; he refuses to do pagan sacrifice.

Polycarp was following the example of bishop Ignatius of Antioch.
