What is Zuckerberg’s plan with Metaverse?

Facebook, the social networking site, has a mission to connect people.

In 2021, it changed its brand name to Meta. The company's rebranding signals it moving towards the direction of creating a virtual environment to help people connect with the world.

The metaverse is an interoperable virtual universe of 3D worlds. You will be able to do multiple activities such as work remotely, exercise with your virtual instructors, and attend lectures.

Everyone moved to work from home during the pandemic and realized the limitations of video calls and online meetings. The experience of not having work colleagues around or not being able to see school friends often created exhaustion and boredom.

Meta’s proprietary own version Metaverse aims to provide immersive

experiences for its users using technologies like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality. Their combination will solve the problems experienced in the pandemic and allow virtual interaction.

The applications of Metaverse include healthcare, education, training,

 space missions, creating a productive work environment, real-estate tours, etcetera. With this technology, it will be possible to do anything in the comfort of your desired location.

It will allow you to work from anywhere across the world, creating

opportunities for skilled people. The barriers to work and education due to the location will no more be a limitation. Seeing the potential of the virtual world, companies have made huge investments in it.

Microsoft, Google, Meta, and more have been developing immersive

technologies, but have a long way to go. For one thing, there are issues with the cost, size, graphic quality, comfort, and battery life of the wearables.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been criticized in the past for the lack of

privacy protection of the users of Facebook. After the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal, the US Government took data privacy seriously and took action against Facebook.

Similar concerns will arise with Meta as it will use private user information

like biometrics, tracking activities, and habits. Other issues like internet addiction, sedentary lifestyle, and social anxiety will need to be addressed.

At present, the average person has used VR to play video games but has

not made immersive technology a part of their daily life. The Metaverse promises a virtual universe making it easier to connect without restrictions -fulfilling Facebook's aim of connecting people everywhere.
