In 1991, at age 24, Dee Dee had a daughter, Gypsy Rose. Her 17 year old husband Rod Blanchard left Dee Dee shortly before Gypsy's birth. Rod says that by the time Gypsy was 3 months old, Dee Dee began saying the newborn had sleep apnea and required overnight hospital stays.

Over time, Dee Dee began stating Gypsy had numerous health issues. She attributed them to a "chromosomal disorder" which she said caused muscular dystrophy and insisted Gypsy use a walker. She homeschooled Gypsy, keeping her extremely isolated from family and her own father.

According to Gypsy, after a skinned knee from a minor motorcycle accident, Dee Dee forced her to use a wheelchair full time. At this point, Dee Dee began lying about her daughter's age in order for her to participate in Special Olympics events, parades and more.

Dee Dee then moved to Louisiana where they lived until 2005, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed their apartment. At this point they moved to Missouri and said all Gypsy's medical records were destroyed. She also got Habitat for Humanity to build them a wheelchair-friendly home.

Despite doctors finding no trace of muscular dystrophy, Dee Dee frequented the hospitals and used the hurricane as an excuse to fabricate numerous ailments and justify prescriptions to dozens of medications. She also forged a birth certificate to make Gypsy seem 4 years younger.

Dee Dee convinced Ronald McDonald Houses, children's hospitals, Make-a-Wish and numerous other organizations to give them free flights, backstage passes, Disney World admission and much more. She kept Gypsy's hair shaved and kept her on oxygen and a feeding tube outside the home.

In 2014, at age 23, Gypsy began sneaking an online relationship with a man named Nick Godejohn. Gypsy knew her mother was deranged and abusive. She and Nick had sexually explicit conversations, arranged a secret meetup and eventually began planning to murder Dee Dee.

In 2015, Gypsy let Nick into their home, gave him duct tape, gloves and a knife, and hid in the bathroom while he stabbed Dee Dee 17 times in her sleep. They took $4,000 cash from the house and fled to a motel. Days later, Dee Dee's suspicious friends and neighbors called police.

In 2018, Nick was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Gypsy rose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is serving a 10 year sentence. She will be eligible for release in 2024.
