DON'T GET LOST! This is hiking 101: plot your route and stick to it. Pack navigational aids: paper maps, a compass, and guidebooks. Don’t rely on your cell phone for directions but do ensure it is 100% powered up before you set out and carry an external charger.

DON'T GET HURT! Minimize your risk of bodily injury while hiking by wearing appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and applying sun cream. Always carry a first aid kit with insect repellent, gauze, disinfectant, band aids and any medications required.

DON'T GET WET! Hikers dress in light layers to help regulate their temperature. Prepare for the weather to change suddenly by packing a lightweight weatherproof hooded coat. An extra pair of socks can save the discomfort of wet feet and a woolly hat can warm you up after dusk.

DON'T GET HUNGRY! Pack a healthy lunch for your hike and take a long break. Sandwiches, wraps, fruit salad, chocolate and coffee make a fine forest feast. Hiking doesn’t have to mean trail mix. Pack pocket sized bags of fruit, popcorn, or homemade granola bars to snack on.

DON'T GET BORED! To add an extra element of interest to your hike, pack an identification book. Plants, flowers or trees, birds, mammals, or insects, whatever you wish to watch is more fun with a guide. Make a game of nature spotting and learn about it later!

DON'T GET THIRSTY! Carry an adequate amount of water per person on your hike and ensure everyone in your party is sipping regularly. Don’t rely on finding water along that way. For longer hikes, carry purification tablets or a mechanical filtration straw to treat stream water.

DON'T GET STUCK! Carrying a multitool can completely change the outcome of an accident. With a scissors, blade, screwdriver, tweezers, pliers and can opener, this handy device fixes your sunglasses, cuts cloth or wood and extracts a splinter in no time.

DON'T GET TIRED! For the most enjoyable hike possible, pace yourself. Move at the speed of your slowest hiking mate and take regular short breaks along the way. Don’t overdo it. Snacking on nuts and dried fruit can keep your energy levels topped up all day long.
