Las Vegas, Nv., Orlando, Fl., Sandy Hook, Ct., Buffalo, N.Y., and Uvalde, Tx. don't have much in common. Some are urban tourist destinations and some are small towns. Some are in the North and some are in the South. But they're all now the site of mass shootings.

The U.S. has a lot of guns. For every 100 people, there are 120 guns. That number is the highest per capita gun ownership rate in the world. Of all homicides in the U.S., 79% are by gun. In strict countries like the U.K., that number is 4%. More guns does equal more gun death.

Most Americans can buy any style of gun they want. Only 6 states and D.C. ban military style assault rifles (ARs). These styles of guns can shoot far more bullets far faster than can other styles like revolvers or shotguns. More bullets does equal more opportunity to hit victims.

Americans can buy unlimited ammunition. In the shooting in Uvalde, the perpetrator bought 375 rounds of ammunition without raising a red flag that he may be planning something bad. Of course, one bullet can end a life, but mass shootings are generally dependent on a lot of ammo.

Gun control has become a political flashpoint with entrenched sides who do not want to compromise. While common sense measures aimed to combat these specific issues listed seems, well, like common sense--any ground given is perceived as a gateway to losing other political ground.

Tougher gun laws are unlikely to result from the most recent slate of shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde. Mostly likely, more Americans will be killed by guns and the citizenry will rise up ... to send 'thoughts and prayers'.
