Recently, I went to Pulicat Island, at the border of AP and Tamil Nadu, with my friends. We got into a conversation with the Anna who was riding the boat (and also owned it), where we found out how he makes money!

After talking to him, it was evident that he earned well and led a good life :)
Here's a step-by-step breakdown and calculation of how much he makes-

On a summer day, he takes one round trip to the Island every day and charges 2,000 rupees, and on weekends, he takes 2 round trips.
➡️That's a total of 38 trips (assuming 30 days and 4 weekends a month)
Each round trip needs Rs.500 diesel, and the boat cost him Rs. 2,00,000.

Keeping these numbers in mind,
🔸Total revenue from the boat: 38 x 2,000= 76,000
🔸Total diesel cost: 38 x 500= 19,000
🔸So, monthly pocket earnings= 57,000

Thus, yearly earnings would be Rs. 6,84,000.
But given that he spent 2L on the boat,
🔸In the first year, he would earn Rs. 4,84,000
🔸And from the second year, he would earn Rs. 6,84,000

And this is the case in peak summers when people hesitate to go out!
And given that he lives in a rural village near Pulicat, he has more purchasing power than a similarly salaried employee in a city. And given that he's an informal worker, future taxes may not apply.

➡️And if you earn more than 25,000 a month, you belong to India's top 10%.
You definitely don't need a white-collar job to earn well, do you?

TLDR:
This man is among India's top 10% wealthy individuals. He owns and operates a boat on Pulicat Island, charging 2,000 rupees for a round trip on weekdays and double that on weekends. With 38 trips per month, his monthly earnings amount to 57,000 rupees or Rs. 6,84,000 yearly

Despite living in a rural village near Pulicat, he has a higher purchasing power than a similarly salaried city employee. As an informal worker, future taxes may not apply to him. It's funnily sad how we undermine life in rural and treat them as second-class citizens!!
