You don’t have to hate the process of pursuing skills but it won’t always be a breeze. I was in archery, dance, choir, Taekwondo, netball, you name it. Then came theatre. My soul was set on fire, it was the feeling I was always looking for, and there were tough times here too.

I sometimes relent that I didn’t stick around long-term for those things that I didn’t seem to enjoy. Then I remember how much I cried at the thought of going to practise sometimes. Forgive yourself for what you did not become, or excel in.

We are all learning to be bigger humans one way or another. Spiritually, morally, socially, romantically, economically. There is an ease in understanding that we aren’t all on the same mission.

Your teachers cannot always be upstanding pinnacles of morality. They too are flawed humans with feelings, teaching flawed humans with feelings, trying to make a living and survive. Sometimes they may not know how to handle situations, or say the ‘right’ thing.

But that doesn’t mean any individual should make you feel less than. There is a difference between maliciousness and words that are mistaken. People may try to teach you young that you should shrink yourself. Respect goes both ways, even if they are different kinds.

You don’t have to belong to every place you come from. Somethings in life are just not ‘for us’. The world is bigger than your small town or country. Never stop learning, whether it be in a college, a night school, or your best friend’s house.
