Capsule Wardrobe: How to create a mix-and-match, year-round wardrobe

"I have nothing to wear." We've all stared at a full closet yet said those words. A capsule wardrobe can save you time and money. Shopping with a capsule wardrobe in mind ensures that every thing in your closet has a purpose—and countless ways you can style them.

1. Choose a basic, tri-color, neutral base palette that goes with your overall style.

Black/White/Grey = edgier / sultry

Navy/White/Brown = preppier / classic

Note, denim doesn't count as a 'color.' You can use it unlimitedly.

2. Choose one additional neutral, not included in the base palette. Two items in your closet will be this color. The two items can be core items (ie top, bottom, or dress) or non-core items (ie jacket or accessories).

Neutrals include:

Olive

Black

White

Grey

Navy

Brown

3. Choose one accent color. Option to substitute an additional neutral color instead if you just aren’t into non-neutral colors. Two items will be in this accent. I suggest you keep it to non-core items (ie jacket, accessories). Having it on core items can be limiting.

For a rock look incorporate some subtle tonal patterns-like pinstripe-or interesting textures-like leather and lace.

For a colorful, quirky look use a tri-color primary base such as bright blue, canary yellow, and Emerald green. Later you'll add in a pop of two accent colors, rather than an add. neutral, that are closely related to each other ie pink and bright red or lavender and plum.

For a boho look, use a variation of the N/W/B palette substituting baby blue for navy, warm cream for white, and a burnt-orange or golden almond for brown. Later, incorporate earthy autumn accents like olive and plum. Think about what colors you see in nature.

Remember:

Quality and fit over quantity

Focus on what makes you feel good now, not 10 years ago

Don't keep it just because it was expensive

You don't need to spend a fortune, but do invest in one or two pieces that make you feel great
